The celebrations begun on the evening of the 19th of January, with the recitals of Yassin and Doa Selamat at Masjid Zahir. Tunku Bendahara of Kedah, Tunku Annuar Alhaj Sultan Badlishah, President of the Kedah Regency Council presided over the prayers and was joined by members of the royal household and thousands of faithful subjects. Those present were Tunku Temengong Kedah, Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, Tunku Laksamana Kedah, Tunku Abdul Thani Sultan Badlishah, Tunku Panglima Besar Kedah Tunku Puteri Intan Shafinaz Sultan Abdul Halim, Raja Kecil Besar of Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Syah Sultan Idris Syah II and YTM Tunku Dato' Seri Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim.

The Investiture ceremony begun with the inspection of the Guard of Honor at the Balai Besar. Menteri Besar, Dato Seri Azizan Abdul Razak welcomed members of the royal family to the special podium. The Royal Malay Regiment band played the state anthem "Allah Selamat Sultan Mahkota". Tunku Annuar inspected the guard of honor and 21 gun salute was given.

Later the royal entourage was received at the Balai Penghadapan, Istana Anak Bukit. The royal orchestra (Nobat Diraja Kedah) played Raja Belayar as the members of the regency council made their graceful entrance. The members of the regency council were clad in their Baju Sikat, which is also the official court dress of the Kedah royal family. The council was seated on a special two tired stage in front of the throne. Royal customs prohibits other members of the royal family to take seat other then the Sultan and Sultanah.

Tunku Panglima Besar of Kedah Tunku Puteri Intan Shafinaz read her speech in her capacity as member of the regency council. Later, the Menteri Besar read his speech and pledged his diligence to the Sultan and the Regency Council. He also praised his government on undertaking various projects for the development of the state and welfare of the people of Kedah. Just after that, the President of the Regency Council, Tunku Bendahara Kedah Tunku Annuar Alhaj read the royal address on behalf of the Sultan of Kedah. Tuanku Abdul Halim thanked his subjects and advised them to strive hard to make the state a modern and progressive one to meet the challenges of time.

A total of 87 people from various walks of life were awarded state awards. Heading the list was international Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Royal Malaysian Air Force chief Jen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud lead the honours list of recipients of awards. They received the Darjah Paduka Seri Setia
Sultan Abdul Halim (DHMS) which carries the title Datuk Paduka. Army Field commander Lt-Jen Datuk Sri Zulkiple Kassim leads another group of five who will receive the Darjah Gemilang Seri Mahkota Kedah (DGMK) which carries the Datuk Wira title.

Meanwhile, Kedah Princess Tunku Datin Marina Tunku Annuar Alhaj and Tunku Dr Muzaffar Tunku Jaafar Laksama received the Darjah Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK). A total of 60 people received their Datukship's under this award. A total of 17 people received the Kedah Justice Peace (JP) award. The investiture ended with the recital of the Doa Selamat by the state Imam. A grand lunch banquet was held at the banquet hall for the dignitaries.
The Admin's of Kedah Sultanate (Kesultanan Kedah) take this opportunity thanking all Kedahan's and Malaysians who extended their warmth and gracious wishes to His Royal Highness Tuanku on the occasion of his 85th birthday. May His Majesty be blessed with long life and good health reigning over the country with glorious and happy days for Malaysia.
